Hopper, Edward
(22 jul. 1882, Nyack, N.Y., EE.UU.–15 may. 1967, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Pintor estadounidense. Inicialmente fue formado por un ilustrador pero más tarde estudió pintura con Robert Henri. En 1913 expuso en el Armory Show, sin embargo, pasó gran parte de su tiempo produciendo carteles publicitarios y aguafuertes para ilustraciones. A mediados de la década de 1920 se volcó a la acuarela y a la pintura al óleo de la vida urbana. Su obra La casa cercana a la estación (1925) y Room in Brooklyn (1932) presentan figuras anónimas y quietas dentro de elementos arquitectónicos geométricos, que producen la inquietante sensación de aislamiento, que más tarde llegó a ser su sello distintivo. Utilizó la luz para aislar a sus figuras y objetos, como en Early Sunday Morning (1930) y Los halcones de la noche (1942). En la década de 1920 ya había alcanzado la madurez de su estilo. Su desarrollo posterior reveló un constante refinamiento e incluso una mayor maestría en el uso de la luz.
